Cat water bowls & fountains

Choose cat water bowls and easy-clean fountains. Compare materials, placement, running costs and verified Catit, Cat Mate and Drinkwell filter compatibility.

Black-and-white cat drinking from a separate ceramic water bowl

A fountain adds a pump, power supply and replacement parts to the ordinary water-bowl routine. Before buying one, look at what you will remove, wash and put back together. A larger reservoir is not a substitute for cleaning.

Bowl or fountain?

A simple bowl is easy to inspect and refill. A fountain offers moving water, but your cat's preference is not something a product description can guarantee. Keep an ordinary water option available rather than making an unfamiliar device the only choice.

Position matters too. Cats Protection's home-setup advice separates food, water and toileting areas. Look for a spot that is easy for the cat to reach and easy for you to check.

Visible water level

Catit PIXI drinking fountain, white

Best for: A visible water-level reminder

The standard white PIXI fountain has an illuminated water-level window and uses the PIXI filter family. It is worth comparing if you want an easy visual reminder to check the water, alongside a routine for washing the reservoir and pump.

What stands out

  • Low-water light helps prompt a refill check
  • Distinct filter family to identify when buying spares

Keep in mind

  • Needs power, pump cleaning and replacement filters
  • This is the standard model, without Smart app features
  • Standard PIXI model
  • Illuminated level window
  • PIXI Triple Action filters

Can you reach the pump?

Look for a cleaning diagram, not just a photograph of the top tray. Can the pump cover and impeller be removed? Are narrow channels accessible? Which components are dishwasher-safe, and which must only be wiped or hand-washed?

Catit's Flower Fountain cleaning guide shows that cleaning includes the pump, not just the visible bowl. Follow the instructions for your exact model; a guide for a similar-looking fountain may describe different parts.

Choose the correct filter family

Write down the model name and product code. Catit's UK filter range separates PIXI, Flower and Mini families. Match the replacement pack to the manufacturer's stated compatibility rather than its shape alone.

Compare pack size and replacement instructions when budgeting. A reusable pump sponge and a disposable filter can have different care requirements. Do not assume a filter removes the need to change water or clean the fountain.

Adjustable flow

Catit Flower drinking fountain

Best for: Trying different fountain flow arrangements

The original Flower fountain offers three flow arrangements from a 3-litre reservoir. It is a practical comparison with the PIXI if you want to vary the water flow and are comfortable taking the pump apart for cleaning.

What stands out

  • Flow can be changed using the flower insert
  • Parts separate for cleaning

Keep in mind

  • Filters differ from the PIXI range
  • Reservoir capacity does not reduce cleaning needs
  • 3-litre reservoir
  • Three flow settings
  • Flower-family filters

Power, placement and spare parts

Check the supplied UK power arrangement, cable routing and what water remains accessible if the pump stops. Decide where a refill can happen without spills reaching plugs. A spare pump is only a useful option if it is the correct model and can actually be fitted.

A fountain is not a treatment for urinary or kidney problems. Changes in drinking or urination should be discussed with your vet. For ordinary meals and bowl access, explore feeding equipment.

Start with the drinking setup and care routine

Use fountain versus bowl for the everyday trade-off, then compare water bowls or easy-clean fountains. A stainless-steel versus ceramic comparison helps separate bowl material from pump access, seals and the parts that remain plastic.

Plan where the water bowl will go before choosing a reservoir size. When adding a pump, use the fountain introduction guide and keep a familiar water option available. Buying moving water does not establish that an individual cat will prefer it.

Keep filters, noise and costs model-specific

Use how to clean a fountain to plan access to the pump and channels. If a unit becomes noisy, start with water level, assembly and pump checks before deciding the whole fountain needs replacing.

Match consumables through the separate Catit, Cat Mate and PetSafe Drinkwell guides. Shape and brand alone are insufficient; family, model code and supported pack matter. For ongoing spending, the running-cost calculator lets you change power, tariff and consumable assumptions rather than relying on one headline annual figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fountain better than an ordinary cat water bowl?

It depends on your cat’s preference and whether you can maintain the equipment. A fountain adds moving water, a pump, power and consumables. A bowl offers a simpler inspection and cleaning routine. Keep an ordinary water option available when introducing unfamiliar equipment.

Does a filter mean I can wash the fountain less often?

No. Follow the exact fountain’s water-change and cleaning instructions, including the pump and narrow channels. A disposable filter and a reusable pump sponge may have different care requirements. Neither makes a dirty reservoir or inaccessible pump clean.

Are filters interchangeable within one brand?

Not necessarily. Match the exact fountain family and model code with the manufacturer-supported pack. Similar size, colour or branding does not establish compatibility. Catit, Cat Mate and Drinkwell each need their own model-specific comparison rather than a universal filter assumption.

Does steel or ceramic make a fountain easier to clean?

Material is one part of the decision. Check the complete water path, removable pump parts, seams and permitted cleaning method. A steel or ceramic drinking surface can still sit above plastic components and awkward channels that determine the real maintenance routine.

How can I estimate a fountain’s running cost?

Separate electricity from filters, sponges and optional replacement parts. Use the rated power or a suitable measured figure, operating hours and your own tariff for the electricity calculation. Adjust consumable assumptions to the exact model and routine rather than treating one example as a universal price.
