Best tall scratching posts for cats
Compare SmartCat, Amazon Basics and Kerbl upright posts by height, surface, base and usable scratching length.

The short answer
Start with the job your cat needs it to do
The SmartCat Ultimate is our starting point for a broad woven-sisal upright surface. Amazon Basics offers a taller 90 cm jute-wrapped alternative, while the 78 cm Kerbl Opal Maxi has a slimmer rope-covered column for smaller or medium-sized cats. Choose enough usable scratching length for your own cat’s stretch, and a base you can position securely.
Compare the options
| Model | Listed overall height | Working surface | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| SmartCat Ultimate | 32 in / about 81 cm | Woven sisal | Broad square format |
| Amazon Basics brown | 90 cm | Jute fibre | Jute is a different texture from sisal |
| Kerbl Opal Maxi | 78 cm | Glued sisal rope | 9 cm diameter column |
Start with the way your cat scratches
A tall post is most useful for a cat that already chooses an upright surface, such as a sofa arm or chair leg. Watch the body position as well as the damage. If the cat braces low and pulls along a carpet, adding another vertical post may leave the original need unanswered. A horizontal pad is a different choice, not a smaller version of the same equipment.
The useful measurement is the length your cat can actually scratch. Overall product height can include a base, decorative cap or resting platform. Look at where the scratchable covering begins and ends, and whether the cat can stand close enough to use the upper section without meeting a shelf.
The shortlist compares woven sisal, jute wrapping and sisal rope. These are different textures, so consider the surface your cat already chooses as well as the usable height. Position and support still matter: a tall post hidden away or allowed to wobble may remain unused.
SmartCat Ultimate: a broad woven-sisal surface
SmartCat Ultimate scratching post, grey
Best for: A full upright stretch
A tall, straightforward post with a woven sisal surface and a broad square base. It is a useful option for a cat that chooses upright scratching and needs room to stretch, without adding a whole climbing tower.
What stands out
- A dedicated vertical scratching surface
- Broad base without extra platforms
Keep in mind
- Needs assembly and a flat, steady position
- Not a substitute for a horizontal scratcher
- Approx. 81 cm overall height
- Approx. 41 × 41 cm base
- Woven sisal
The SmartCat Ultimate's 32 inch overall height is approximately 81 cm, and the 16 inch square base is approximately 41 cm across. The square post gives a different feel from a narrow rope-wrapped cylinder. Woven sisal is the reason to compare it, particularly if your cat likes to grip and pull on a broad surface.
It also demands a proper floor position. The base should sit flat, with room for the cat's body in front and to either side. A thick rug edge or a half-hidden position behind a sofa can undermine the arrangement. Assemble the base connection as instructed and inspect it rather than relying on a listing's absolute promise about tipping.
The selected grey Amazon listing describes an international product. Check the seller, delivery arrangement, included fixings and instructions before ordering. We do not present a current stock or delivery promise. The manufacturer's grey Ultimate page is the source for the core construction and dimensions.
Best reason to choose it: a substantial woven-sisal upright surface. Main reason to compare another option: your cat clearly prefers a cylindrical rope texture or horizontal scratching.
Amazon Basics 90 cm post: the taller jute alternative
Amazon Basics 90 cm scratching post, brown
Best for: A taller jute-wrapped column
A tall single-column post wrapped in jute fibre, with a carpeted base and hanging toy. It offers a different texture from the SmartCat’s woven sisal, so choose around the surface your cat already uses.
What stands out
- Tall upright format
- A distinct material choice from woven sisal
Keep in mind
- Jute is not sisal
- Inspect the hanging toy and do not assume the base cannot tip
- 90 cm listed overall height
- Jute fibre wrapping
- Carpet-covered base
The brown 90 cm model provides the greatest listed overall height in this shortlist. Its scratching column is wrapped in jute fibre; the carpet wording in the product title also describes the base covering and should not be read as proof of a sisal scratching surface.
The extra height can be useful when the cat reaches near the top of a shorter post, but compare the continuous working section before assuming all 90 cm are available. Keep enough clearance above and around it for the hanging toy to move without catching curtains or cables. Remove a damaged toy according to the product instructions and keep loose strings out of reach.
Choose this as a material and height comparison, rather than simply because a bigger number sounds better. A cat that already ignores jute may not change its preference when the post is taller. If a familiar sisal post is being used happily but is too short, a taller sisal option is the more relevant comparison.
Best reason to choose it: a tall, straightforward jute-wrapped column. Main limitation: the base and connection still need checking in the intended position; weighted construction is not a guarantee against movement.
Kerbl Opal Maxi: a slimmer sisal-rope column
Kerbl Opal Maxi scratching post, grey
Best for: A rope-wrapped post for a smaller or medium-sized cat
A 78 cm single post with glued natural sisal rope and a carpet-covered base. It is the narrower-column comparison for a smaller or medium-sized cat that prefers a rope-wrapped upright surface.
What stands out
- Simple upright layout
- Manufacturer identifies the post material and diameter
Keep in mind
- Overall height includes the base and top
- Confirm the base drawing: listings differ by about 1 cm
- 78 cm overall height
- 9 cm post diameter
- Natural sisal rope
Kerbl specifies 78 cm overall height and a 9 cm column for the Opal Maxi, aimed at smaller to normal-sized cats. The natural sisal rope is glued to the post. This is a different scratching experience from SmartCat's broad woven surface, even though both use sisal.
There is a small measurement discrepancy worth noticing: the current Kerbl specification gives a 38 cm square base, while the selected Amazon title says 39 cm. If the post must fit a very tight gap, obtain the selected model's drawing before ordering. Do not plan a friction-tight fit around either figure.
It is the shortest model here, so a very long cat may outstretch the useful surface. The column diameter is useful information, but it does not establish the strength of the whole assembled unit. Check the base connection and instructions, especially after moving the post or putting it back after cleaning.
Best reason to choose it: a simpler rope-covered upright for a smaller or medium-sized cat. Main limitation: 78 cm overall height should not be mistaken for 78 cm of uninterrupted rope.
How to judge height without guessing a breed rule
Observe a comfortable stretch against an existing surface and note roughly where the front paws reach. You do not need to lift or stretch the cat to get a measurement. Compare that reach with the continuous scratchable section shown in the product drawing, allowing the cat to stand naturally at its base.
A breed label does not replace this check. Two cats of the same breed may have different body lengths, preferred angles and strength of pull. For a larger cat, compare the post diameter, base outline and maker's intended use as well as the height. Our large-cat furniture guide explains the separate resting-space decision.
Put the post where the existing habit happens
Cats Protection's scratching advice covers sturdy posts, suitable orientation and positioning. An alternative close to the chosen scratching spot is generally more useful to evaluate than one hidden in an unused corner. Leave an approach that lets the cat use the full surface.
If the post is beside a sofa, open any reclining mechanism and check the furniture's moving parts cannot hit it. Avoid trapping the base under another item simply to stop movement unless the maker permits that arrangement. A stable assembled product in an appropriate position is preferable to an improvised restraint.
Keep a horizontal option if your cat uses both orientations. It can be a small part of the same room setup; you do not need to replace every scratching surface with a tower. See the scratching category for the distinction between posts, pads and angled boards.
Inspect the structure as the covering wears
Fraying rope and a loose structural joint are different problems. A worn covering may have a compatible manufacturer replacement, while a cracked base or damaged connection needs a structural solution. Keep the post code, thread size and instructions with the order details so a future replacement can be matched correctly.
Do not assume a generic sisal roll restores the original support. Before considering any covering repair, check what the maker supports and whether the underlying post is sound. Remove loose material that could catch claws, and retire equipment with damaged structural parts until it can be properly repaired or replaced.
For a post that fits but remains unused, compare the placement guide. If the existing habit is on a carpet, our horizontal-scratcher comparison covers a different orientation.
As the surface wears, use when to replace a scratching post. If only a supported column needs changing, check part dimensions and connections before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
How tall should a scratching post be?
Choose enough continuous scratching surface for your cat to stretch comfortably while standing at the base. Overall product height can include unscratchable caps and boards, so compare the actual covered section. The three options here range from 78 to 90 cm overall; that range is a shortlist, not a universal rule for every cat.
Is sisal better than jute for a cat scratching post?
They offer different textures, and preference matters. The SmartCat has woven sisal, the Kerbl uses sisal rope and the selected Amazon Basics post uses jute fibre. If your cat already uses one surface willingly, that observation is more useful than assuming a single material suits every cat.
Why does my cat still scratch the sofa?
Look at the orientation, texture, working length and position of the alternative. A post hidden away may not serve the same location as the sofa arm. Offer an appropriate surface near the habit and follow welfare guidance; a taller post alone cannot guarantee a change in behaviour.
Can I replace the rope on any scratching post?
Only follow a repair method the maker supports, and first check the underlying post, base and connections. Replacement rope cannot repair a cracked support. When a whole replacement column is available, match its length, diameter, thread and fixing arrangement rather than using appearance alone.
Does a heavy base mean a post cannot tip?
No. Stability also depends on correct assembly, floor contact, position and the forces applied in use. Keep the base flat, inspect the connection and follow the model instructions. A broad base alone does not establish stability in every position.
