The best wet-food cat feeder for your routine

Choose between two timed lids, a rotating meal tray and a microchip-controlled bowl. Compare cooling, cleaning and the limits that matter.

Ginger cat eating from a shallow ceramic bowl in a warm home kitchen

The short answer

Choose the opening, not the longest timer

For several pre-portioned servings, start with the Cat Mate C500. For only one or two later meals, the C200 is simpler. If the problem is another pet eating from the bowl, consider the standard SureFeed instead: it controls access and does not schedule meals. None of these three refrigerates food.

What’s the main problem you’re solving?

Start with

Cat Mate C200 two-meal feeder

Two separately timed lids cover one or two later servings with a simple dial setup.

None of these three refrigerates food. Ice packs are not refrigeration.

Which feeder fits the problem?

For a meal later in the working day, a timed compartment makes sense. For several small portions, a rotating tray offers more openings. For a cat whose food gets eaten by another pet, scheduling alone leaves the same problem once the lid opens.

Write down the number of portions you need to make available after you leave, rather than the total meals your cat eats in a day. Then compare that number with the future openings. A tray's compartment count and a timer's maximum range describe different things.

Cat Mate C500: the more flexible timed choice

For several meals

Cat Mate C500 five-meal feeder

Best for: Several timed servings

A rotating tray with one compartment open initially and four scheduled openings. A sensible starting point when you want several pre-portioned meals without an app.

What stands out

  • More scheduled openings than the C200
  • Removable dishwasher-safe lid and tray

Keep in mind

  • Ice packs require preparation
  • All cats can reach the open compartment
  • Four timed openings
  • Two supplied ice packs
  • 3 × AA batteries

The C500 is our starting recommendation when you need more than two future openings. Its five compartments include one initially exposed portion, followed by up to four timed servings. The rotating layout is useful for pre-portioning several meals without a Wi-Fi connection.

The trade-off is a larger tray assembly to prepare and clean. Check that you can reach the controls, remove the lid and lift the tray in the position where you will use it. It offers no way to decide which cat eats the exposed portion.

The lid and bowl are removable, and the maker specifies dishwasher cleaning for those pieces. The electrical base is different: wipe it as instructed and do not immerse it. Two ice packs are supplied, but preparing them and managing food storage remain part of the job. These features and the power requirement are documented by Closer Pets for the C500.

Choose it if: several timed portions solve your daily problem. Look elsewhere if: individual access or refrigerated storage is the deciding requirement.

Cat Mate C200: a simpler choice for fewer openings

For 1–2 later meals

Cat Mate C200 two-meal feeder

Best for: One or two later meals

Two lidded compartments with separate dial timers. Choose this simpler layout when you only need one or two later servings, rather than a full rotating tray.

What stands out

  • Separate timers for each compartment
  • Removable lids and bowls

Keep in mind

  • Only two compartments
  • 48-hour timer range is not a food-storage promise
  • Two timed lids
  • One supplied ice pack
  • 1 × AA battery

The C200 uses two separately timed lids, with a supplied ice pack beneath the bowls. Its dial timers offer a different setup from the C500's digital schedule. If you want one or two later servings, extra tray compartments may add little to your routine.

The manufacturer's stated footprint is 27.5 × 21.7cm, with an 8.5cm overall height. That helps you mark out its place on the floor; allow access to the lids as well. It runs on one AA battery and its removable lids and bowls can be washed as the maker instructs. See the official C200 product details.

A 48-hour dial range does not mean a wet meal can be left for 48 hours. Choose the shorter, practical opening you need and check the food-storage guidance separately. A lid opening also does not establish that the intended cat has eaten.

Choose it if: one or two later meals are enough and you prefer a straightforward dial setup. Look elsewhere if: you need several scheduled openings or to separate pets' access.

Standard SureFeed: the access alternative

For individual access

SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder

Best for: Individual access, rather than timing

The lid responds to a registered cat’s microchip or compatible tag. It belongs on your shortlist if another pet steals food, but it does not release meals at scheduled times.

What stands out

  • Access tied to registered identities
  • Gradual lid-training mode

Keep in mind

  • Does not schedule meals
  • Rear access may need an additional cover
  • Wet or dry food
  • 400ml bowl
  • 4 × C batteries

The standard SureFeed responds to a registered microchip or compatible tag. It opens when an authorised pet approaches rather than when a mealtime arrives. That can be the more relevant tool if food stealing is the reason you started looking at feeders.

This is the standard Microchip Pet Feeder, not the Connect version. Its bowl capacity is 400ml; that is a capacity measurement, not a portion recommendation. The overall dimensions are 32cm deep, 23cm wide and 20cm high, so compare its arch as well as its footprint with the cat's access needs. The manufacturer specifies four C batteries.

The lid has a gradual training mode. Introduce it while you are present and check how the cat approaches. A determined other pet may need to be considered from every direction: the manufacturer offers a separate rear cover for access from behind while the lid is open. Check the official SureFeed information before buying accessories.

Choose it if: protecting access to a filled bowl is the job. Look elsewhere if: the bowl needs to become available at a future time or food needs active cooling.

Ice packs are not refrigeration

The two Cat Mate models use pre-frozen packs. The standard SureFeed uses a covered bowl without active cooling. These mechanisms do not create the same storage conditions as a fridge, and we do not assign them a universal safe holding time.

The C500 instructions require preparing the packs before use and advise against leaving wet food for long periods in very warm weather. The food, room conditions and interval until the meal is served matter alongside the feeder.

Follow the storage directions on your exact food packaging. Purina UK's storage guidance says opened wet food should be covered and refrigerated, with its stated use period applying to those storage conditions. That should not be transferred to a room-temperature feeder.

If refrigerated storage is the main reason you are buying, compare an explicitly refrigerated model and its UK instructions separately. A large compartment count or long timer range cannot answer that requirement.

Make the whole routine workable

Count openings before you count convenience

Imagine you feed a portion yourself before leaving and want two more later. That is two future openings. A C200 can cover that count; a C500 offers additional openings you may not need. If you want four later portions, the C500's schedule becomes more relevant. These are equipment examples, not advice on how many meals your cat should have.

Use your cat's established feeding plan and portion sizes. None of these feeders decides a suitable diet. A product's maximum bowl capacity is a storage limit, not a target to fill.

Check the cat can actually use it

Set up and observe the feeder at home before depending on it. Can your cat reach the food comfortably? Do they remain comfortable when a lid moves or a tray turns? Are they eating the portion, rather than merely approaching the device? Leave time to discover a problem without a missed meal.

The C500 manual calls for checking operation with the cat present. It also makes clear that cats should not be left for long periods without someone checking on them. Timed equipment supports a care arrangement; it does not provide one.

Compare cleaning and spares

List the parts that touch food: bowl, lid, seals and any tray corners. Check their separate washing instructions and how long it takes you to remove and replace them. Keep electrical sections out of the sink unless the maker explicitly permits immersion.

Spare bowls can make cleaning easier and spare ice packs can help you rotate between use and freezing. Match the accessory to the exact model and package; similar names do not establish compatibility. Confirm which accessories are included before adding extras to the order.

More than one cat means more than one decision

A timed opening is available to whichever pet gets there. Placing one feeder between two cats does not create individual portions. Consider separate feeding positions and how each cat can approach and leave. Cats Protection's multi-cat guidance explains the value of distributed resources rather than competition at one location.

A microchip feeder can address access, but watch the complete interaction. Another pet approaching from behind, waiting by the opening or blocking the route can still affect the feeding arrangement.

We omit fixed prices, star ratings and current-stock promises because they can change. The retailer button is the place to check the selected option, seller and current offer. If you are still deciding which kind of device you need, start with feeding equipment. For water and cleaning access, explore bowls and fountains.

For a choice centred on physical controls and local setup, compare cat feeders without Wi-Fi. That guide explains the different jobs of timed lids, a digital tray, a hopper and selective access.

For the routine after purchase, use introducing an automatic feeder, feeder cleaning and the Cat Mate bowl and ice-pack compatibility guide.

Sources and recommendation method

Model facts come from the linked Closer Pets product pages and C500 instructions, plus Sure Petcare's standard-feeder information. Food-storage context comes from Purina; household-resource guidance comes from Cats Protection. The comparison connects each documented feeding function with its practical limitations.

Frequently asked questions

Does a five-meal tray provide five future meals?

Check how many compartments are already open at setup. The C500 has one initially open compartment and up to four future timed openings. Count the later servings you actually need rather than comparing the total number of compartments alone.

Can the standard SureFeed schedule a meal?

No. The standard Microchip Pet Feeder controls who can reach a filled bowl by responding to a registered identity. It does not open a meal at a programmed time. Choose between timing and access according to the problem you are trying to solve.

Do the Cat Mate ice packs refrigerate wet food?

No. Pre-frozen packs are different from an actively refrigerated compartment. Follow the exact food-storage directions and feeder instructions, accounting for room conditions and the interval before serving. A timer range is not a universal safe holding time for a wet meal.

Can two cats use the same timed feeder?

An open compartment is available to whichever pet reaches it. A schedule does not assign individual portions to different cats. Observe the feeding arrangement and consider separate positions or selective access if one pet takes another’s food.

Which parts should I clean separately?

Follow the exact model instructions for the removable bowl, tray, lid and seals, and treat the powered base separately. A dishwasher-safe bowl does not make the motor or controls washable. Dry food-contact parts appropriately and reassemble before checking operation.
